Sawan 2025: Complete Guide For Sawan Somwar Vrat; Check Rules, Dos And Don’ts
Preparation A Night Before Sawan Somwar Vrat
Prepare your home and puja space by cleaning it thoroughly on Sunday. Gather all necessary puja items like flowers, belpatra, milk and diyas. This ensures a smooth and peaceful puja experience the next morning. Having everything ready beforehand helps you focus on the spiritual aspects of the vow. A clean and organised space also reflects the respect and devotion you have for Lord Shiva.
Early Morning Routine
Wake up early, ideally during Brahma Muhurtha and take a bath to purify your body and mind. Wear clean and light-coloured clothes, preferably white or yellow, which symbolise purity and spirituality. This helps you prepare for the vow with a calm and positive mindset. A peaceful morning routine also enables you to connect with Lord Shiva on a deeper level.
Taking the Sankalp
Sit calmly in front of Lord Shiva's idol or Shivling and take a sankalp, a sacred vow to observe the fast with devotion and dedication. Offer your prayers and wishes to Lord Shiva, seeking his blessings for a happy and fulfilling life. This sankalp marks the beginning of your spiritual journey, and it's essential to approach it with sincerity and faith.
Abhishek Ritual
Perform the abhishek ritual, a crucial part of the vow, by offering Panchamrit to Lord Shiva. Start with pure water, followed by milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar. Recite "Om Namah Shivaya" or the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra during the ritual. This abhishek purifies your mind and body and the recitation of mantras helps you connect with Lord Shiva's divine energy.

Offering Belpatra and Other Items
Offer belpatra, white flowers, fruits and incense sticks to Lord Shiva. You can also offer dhatura, bhang or sandalwood paste. Light diyas and incense sticks, and spend some time in prayer and meditation. These offerings symbolise your gratitude and devotion to Lord Shiva. The act of offering belpatra in particular is believed to please Lord Shiva and grant your wishes. This ritual is an essential part of the vow.
Listening to the Vrat Katha
Listen to or read the Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha, which narrates the story of a devotee who pleased Lord Shiva with their devotion. This helps you understand the significance of the vow and connect with Lord Shiva emotionally. The katha is a powerful reminder of the importance of faith and devotion.
Fasting Options
Choose from three types of fasts: Nirjala (without food or water), Phalahar (fruits and milk), or Ekasamaya (one meal in the evening). Select the option that suits your health and capacity. Lord Shiva values your devotion and sincerity more than the strictness of the fast. Refrain from consuming salt during Sawan Somwar Vrat.
Evening Puja And Breaking the Fast
Perform a small puja in the evening, light diyas and offer flowers or belpatra to Mahadev. Recite Shiv Aarti and break your fast according to your fasting type. The evening puja is highly essential to wrap up the day's observance.
Continuing the Vrat
Many devotees choose to observe this vow every Monday during the Sawan month. If you feel connected and have the time, you can continue the vow, experiencing peace and joy through devotion. By continuing the vow, you can seek Lord Shiva's blessings and guidance throughout the month.
