Sawan 2025: During the sacred month of Sawan, women across India worship Lord Shiva with deep devotion, seeking his blessings for marital harmony, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment. This holy period holds special significance for Shiva devotees, especially women who observe fasts, offer prayers, and perform various rituals to honour the powerful deity. However, while performing these sacred practices, it is essential to follow certain guidelines to maintain the sanctity of the worship. From the way offerings are made to the specific rules of fasting and prayer conduct, each detail carries spiritual weight. Observing these guidelines helps ensure that the devotion reaches Lord Shiva with purity and reverence.
Let us check out 7 essential tips that must be followed by women while worshipping Bholenath below:
Women Must Follow THESE 7 Essential Rules While Worshipping Lord Shiva
1. Always Offer Water And Milk With Devotion
While offering water or milk to the Shiva Linga, women must do so with a clean heart and focused mind. The offerings should be poured gently in a clockwise manner while chanting Shiva mantras. Avoid overpouring or doing it hastily, as the act must reflect respect and pure intent rather than mechanical ritual.
2. Use Only Fresh And Approved Offerings
Women must offer only items that are considered pure and appropriate for Lord Shiva. Belpatra (Bael leaves), white flowers, and pure water or cow’s milk are ideal. Tulsi leaves and Ketaki flowers are strictly forbidden. Offerings should always be fresh, clean, and free from insect damage, as using impure items is seen as disrespectful.
3. Avoid Touching The Shiva Linga During Menstruation
During menstruation, women should refrain from touching the Shiva Linga or performing rituals directly. However, they can continue chanting mantras or meditating on Lord Shiva’s name from a distance. This practice is rooted in traditional ideas of spiritual hygiene and respect for the sanctity of the deity during this natural cycle.

4. Perform Puja In The Morning Hours
The best time for women to worship Lord Shiva is early in the morning, especially during Brahma Muhurat. This time is believed to hold divine energy and enhances the spiritual impact of prayers. Starting the day with clean surroundings, a bath, and a calm mind brings positivity and invites divine blessings into one’s life.
5. Do Not Offer Haldi (Turmeric) To Mahadev
While turmeric is considered sacred in many rituals, it is not meant for Lord Shiva. Women must remember not to include haldi in Shiva puja, as it is more associated with feminine deities. Instead, use sandalwood paste or sacred ash (vibhuti) to adorn the Shiva Linga during prayers and offerings.
6. Maintain Cleanliness During Worship
Cleanliness is key when performing Shiva puja. Women should bathe before beginning rituals, wear clean clothes, and ensure that the puja area is spotless. Even the vessels used for offerings must be clean. This physical purity supports mental clarity and reinforces the spiritual discipline necessary for sincere worship of Lord Shiva.

7. Chant Shiva Mantras With Focus And Respect
Reciting mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya” with focus is crucial. Women must chant slowly and respectfully without rushing or casually repeating them. The power of Shiva mantras lies in their vibration and intention. A calm and humble heart, combined with sincere chanting, invites Lord Shiva’s grace and brings inner peace and protection.
