Sawan 2025: Rules To Follow

During the holy month of Sawan, devotees of Lord Shiva are encouraged to follow a disciplined and spiritually focused lifestyle. One of the most important rules is to observe fasting, especially on Mondays, known as Shravan Somvar.

Some choose to fast for the entire month, consuming only sattvic (pure and simple) foods like fruits, milk, and vegetarian meals. Avoiding garlic, onion, non-vegetarian food, and alcohol is considered essential, as it helps maintain inner purity and devotion. Devotees wake up early, take a bath, and visit Shiva temples to offer milk, water, belpatra, dhatura and white flowers, all of which are considered sacred offerings to Lord Shiva.

Apart from food-related discipline, behaviour and speech are also expected to be pure during this month. Avoiding anger, gossip and negative thoughts is highly recommended. Chanting “Om Namah Shivaya” or the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra daily is believed to bring divine blessings and inner strength.
