Shashthi Shradh 2025: Significance And Rituals
Chhath Shradh or Shashthi Shradh holds utmost importance to honour the family members who passed away on the Shashthi tithi of Krishna Paksha or Shukla Paksha of any Hindu lunar month. The significance of Shraddha lies in its Sanskrit roots, 'Shrat' meaning truth and 'Dha' meaning to hold or place. It's a ritual performed with utmost faith, sincerity, and devotion to honour and provide sustenance to departed ancestors. Shraddha Karma is a way of expressing gratitude for the gift of life and lineage, and fulfilling the sacred debt owed to the ancestors.
Shashthi Shradh involves honouring the ancestors residing in Pitriloka or transitioning through other realms. The rituals facilitate their journey towards higher realms or liberation and seek to invoke ancestral blessings for the well-being and prosperity of the living family. The rituals of Shashthi Shradha include Pinda Daan, where rice balls are offered to the ancestors, and Tarpan, where water mixed with sesame seeds is offered. Brahmins are invited to represent the universal gods and the ancestors, and are offered food and other essentials. This helps satisfy the ancestors and bring peace and harmony to the family.
