Shitala Shashti 2025: Significance
The Shiv Purana states that Sital Sasthi commemorates the holy marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, a celebration that dates back to ancient times. According to legend, Parvati, a manifestation of Goddess Sati, performed rigorous penance and devotion via jap (chanting) and tap (austerities) to attain Lord Shiva as her spouse. Profoundly touched by her devotion, Lord Shiva embraced her affection, and their celestial union occurred on the day of Jyestha Shukla Paksha Sasthi. This day is thought to be very fortunate, representing the triumph of faith, endurance, and inner power.
Sital Sasthi is linked to the birth of Lord Kartikeya, who subsequently vanquished the demon Tarakasura, bringing back peace and harmony. The festival is lovingly referred to as the ‘Monsoon Wedding’ of Lord Shiva and Parvati, as it aligns with the arrival of the monsoon season. Shiva’s severe asceticism reflects the oppressive summer heat, while his union with Parvati represents the refreshing and revitalising onset of rain. Farmers and worshippers honour this festival with immense enthusiasm, greeting the rains that rejuvenate the land and highlighting the spiritual and seasonal importance of this sacred connection.
Shitala Shashti 2025: Rituals
The celebration of Sital Sasthi marks the marriage ceremony of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. In Sambalpur, it is known as the 'Sital Sasthi Yatra Festival,' and the celebrations continue for 5 days. In this celebration, a local family is selected to portray Parvati's parents, and they offer her hands in marriage to Shiva. Since Lord Shiva is referred to as 'Swayam Bhu', there is no one who assumes the role of his parents.
The inaugural day of the festival is referred to as ‘Patra Pendi’ day. On this day, the selected family takes in Parvati. Following two days, the statue of Goddess Parvati reaches the home of her adoptive parents. In a ceremonial tradition, from this chosen residence, the bride (symbolising Goddess Parvati) is led in an elaborate nighttime procession for the wedding event. Similarly, Lord Shiva, along with various Hindu Gods and Goddesses, arrives at the wedding ceremony location. This sacred procession is guided by Lord Narsimha and Lord Hanuman.
Every traditional ritual and custom is carried out for this sacred wedding ceremony. The celebrations are observed by worshippers from nearby states and farther away. Following the ceremonies, on the next evening, the divine couple starts their journey through the town, known as ‘Nagar Parikrama’. This occasion is commonly referred to as ‘Sital Sasthi Yatra’. Traditional music, traditional dance, and similar events serve as the main draw of this carnival. During this wedding event, many 'Hijaras' or 'Eunuchs' gather to take part in the festivities. This is because Lord Shiva was also called ‘Ardhanarishwara’ (half man half woman).
