Skanda Sashti June 2025: Dedicated to Lord Murugan or Kartikeya, Skanda Sashti is a significant festival for Tamil Hindus. Additionally known as Skanda, Lord Murugan is the deity of war and the son of Lord Shiva. Lord Skanda is portrayed holding a spear, the 'vel', seated on a peacock. Skanda Sashti is usually observed on the sixth day of Shukla Paksha during every Hindu lunar month. Devotees of Lord Murugan fast on this sacred day to appease the divine lord and seek his blessings. Skanda Sashti June 2025: Significance
Lord Murugan, affectionately known as Skanda or Kartikeya, is one of the most venerated gods in Hinduism. Nonetheless, the legend behind his appearance is distinctive, as a sphere of flame produced by Shiva and Shakti was enclosed within a lake created by Parvati, ultimately leading to the appearance of Lord Skanda. His goal was to defeat the demon Soorapadma and his siblings, which he accomplished on the Shashti tithi during the Shukla Paksha. Curiously, when Lord Skanda cut off Soorapadma's head with his Vel, a peacock and a rooster appeared, with the peacock becoming his mount or vahana and the rooster a symbol on his flag.
Celebrating Skanda Shashti with sincerity and devotion is believed to attract the blessings of Lord Skanda. This day is especially favourable for working professionals and married couples to enhance their relationships. Worshippers usually observe a six-day vrat as offering prayers to Lord Skanda on designated days is believed to bring various advantages. The second, third and fourth days of this vrata is believed to alleviate health problems and positive energy, while the fifth and sixth days are believed to grant joy, financial success and professional growth.

Skanda Sashti June 2025: Rituals
Skanda Sashti is observed with utmost devotion and fervour, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Worshippers observe a fast, recite sacred hymns, including Skanda Shashti Kavacham to seek the blessings of Lord Murugan. On the day of Skanda Sashti, devotees usually worship Lord Skanda, Lord Shiva and Devi Parvati.
Idol of lord Murugan is worshipped with utmost devotion. Followers offer deepam, camphor, flowers and kumkum to the divine Lord. Abhishkam of Lord Murugan is also performed with sacred water and milk. Worshippers also visit temples to offer prayers. Kavadi, a traditional dance is also performed as a part of the festivities. Many devotees follow a rigid diet, steering clear of non-vegetarian items, garlic and onion, and consume just one meal daily. By observing the sacred fast of Skanda Sashti, devotees can attain spiritual joy, financial success and professional growth.
