Thai Masam 2025: The Tamil month of Thai, spanning mid-January to mid-February, is a highly auspicious period in the Tamil calendar. A traditional Tamil saying, 'Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum', encapsulates the optimism surrounding this month, translating to 'With the dawn of Thai, every effort will flourish and succeed'. The Tamil community enthusiastically celebrates the first day of Thai as the Pongal festival, which also marks the Tamil New Year. This month is particularly significant for devotees of Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga, who believe that Thai is an ideal time to seek their blessings. Furthermore, Muruga devotees observe a unique custom of carrying decorated kavadis to the six sacred abodes of Lord Muruga, known as Arupadaiveedu.

Thai Masam 2025: Significance

As Thai commences, classical art forms give way to folk art forms, showcasing the diverse cultural tapestry of Tamil Nadu.

The first day of Thai is celebrated as Pongal, a joyous harvest festival expressing gratitude to farmers and their livestock. This significance earns Thai the reputation as the "month of auspicious beginnings", making it an ideal time for new ventures and endeavours.

Thai Masam 2025: Rituals

During Thai Masam, devotees observe various rituals to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Muruga. One of the significant rituals is the 'Kavadi Attam', where devotees carry elaborately decorated kavadis, symbolising the burden of their sins, to the six sacred abodes of Lord Muruga. This ritual is performed with great fervour, accompanied by traditional music and dance. Devotees also offer prayers, perform puja, and offer sacrifices to appease the deities.

Another important ritual observed during Thai Masam is the 'Pongal' celebration, which marks the beginning of the harvest season. Devotees prepare traditional sweet dishes, such as 'Sarkarai Pongal', and offer them to the deities as a symbol of gratitude. They also decorate their homes with intricate kolams and exchange gifts with family and friends.
