Lord Venkateswara, fervently known as Srinivasa or Tirupati Balaji is known as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The deity is regarded as a divine entity who has descended upon the earth to save humankind in the Kaliyuga. There are numerous legends associated with Lord Tirupati Balaji, with one accounting that once Lord Venkateswara had to take a loan from Lord Kubera, the deity of money and wealth. Additionally, it is believed Lord Srinivasa is in debt to Lord Kubera to date! However, have you ever thought why Lord Tirupati Balaji, who is himself the source of all good fortune and wealth, had to take a loan? Well, let us explore an interesting legend that enumerates the same below.

Why Lord Venkateswara Swamy Took Loan From Kubera?

According to the sacred Hindu legends, Lord Venkateswara Swamy took a loan of one crore and fourteen lakh gold coins from Lord Kubera to fund his wedding with Princess Padmavati. According to legend, Srinivasa wanted to marry Padmavati, but her father, King Akasa Raja, demanded a dowry, which Srinivasa couldn't afford. To prove himself worthy of marrying Padmavati, Srinivasa sought help from Lord Kubera, who agreed to lend him a vast amount of gold coins. This loan was given on the condition that Srinivasa would repay it with interest by the end of Kaliyuga, or else, he wouldn’t let Lord Vishnu in his Srinivasa form back to Vaikuntha, this heavenly abode.

The story goes that King Akasa Raja looked down upon Srinivasa due to his relatively poor status and demanded a huge dowry to test his worth. Srinivasa, determined to marry Padmavati, took the loan from Kubera to meet the king's demands. This loan was not just a financial transaction but a divine gesture that showcased Srinivasa's commitment to his beloved Padmavati. By taking the loan, Srinivasa demonstrated his willingness to go to great lengths to fulfil his obligations and marry the woman he loved.

If we talk about the spiritual significance of this legend, the loan Lord Srinivasa took from Lord Kubera also represents the notion that even the gods are not above the laws of karma and must fulfil their obligations. In this case, Lord Venkateshwara’s loan serves as a reminder of the importance of honouring one's debts and commitments.
