Ugadi 2025: Significance
Ugadi or Yugadi marks the New Year in India's Deccan Region, covering states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. This festive day is celebrated under different names across various regions, such as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Thapna in Rajasthan and Puthandu in Tamil Nadu. The celebrations commemorate the beginning of the Kali Yuga, Lord Brahma's creation of the universe, and Lord Rama's return from exile.
According to Hindu legends, Lord Brahma created the universe born from a lotus emerging from Lord Vishnu's navel. When Lord Brahma's age ends, Lord Shiva destroys the universe, and Lord Brahma is reborn, restarting the cycle. This continuous creation and destruction cycle has no end. The universe's creation by Lord Brahma on Shukla Paksha Pratipada of the Hindu Chaitra month is celebrated as Ugadi or Gudi Padwa, marking the beginning of a new year and a fresh cycle of life.

Ugadi 2025: Rituals
Ugadi is a vibrant festival marked by colours, joy and celebration. Preparations begin a week in advance, with people cleaning and decorating their homes with rangolis, fresh flowers and mango leaves, symbolising prosperity. They also purify their surroundings with cow dung water and take a holy bath at dawn to worship God and seek blessings for the coming year.
Traditional dishes like 'pulihora' and 'bobbatlu' made with raw mangoes are prepared, along with 'Ugadi pachchadi', a symbolic dish representing life's flavours. Cultural activities, including devotional songs, hymns and poetry recitals are also organised. People gather to hear the Panchanga - a forecast of the New Year and seek blessings from their elders.
On Ugadi, families unite and people visit temples such as the Tirupati Venketeshwara temple and Lord Shiva temple at Srisailam to offer puja. A special mixture of neem leaves and jaggery is distributed and devotees come together to celebrate the start of a new year, filled with hope, joy and spiritual rejuvenation.
