Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: Significance
Vat Savitri Vrat is a significant celebration in Hindu culture, primarily celebrated by married women who wish for the well-being and longevity of their husbands and children. The date of the celebration varies according to the lunar calendar, resulting in northern and southern India commemorating it about 15 days apart. As per the tale, Devi Savitri was so committed that she persuaded Lord Yamaraja to restore her husband Satyawan's life. As a result, married women revere the Vat tree and Devi Savitri, seeking her blessings for their households.
During Vat Savitri Vrat, women venerate the Banyan tree, symbolising the three principal deities: Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Women engage in fasting during this period to seek safety and good fortune for their husbands. The celebration is brimming with happiness and reverence throughout India, and it's referenced in Hindu scriptures such as the Bhavishyottar Purana and Skanda Purana. Married women revere the Vat tree and Devi Savitri to safeguard their husbands' health and aid their families, motivated by Devi Savitri's devotion.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: Rituals
On Vat Savitri Vrat, women rise early and have a unique bath with sesame seeds and Indian gooseberry. Then, they dress in fresh garments and embellish themselves with bangles and red powder. They consume Banyan tree roots along with water. For individuals fasting for three days, it’s solely the roots consumed during this period. While worshipping the Banyan tree, they wrap a yellow or red thread around it, present water, flowers, and rice, and circle it while reciting prayers.
If you can't visit a Banyan tree, you can make a portrait on wood or a plate with turmeric or sandalwood paste and perform a puja as you would at the tree. Following the puja, unique dishes are prepared and shared among friends and family. Women seek blessings from elders and married women at home, highlighting the significance of family and community.
Donating to those in need during Vat Savitri Vrat is highly virtuous. Many individuals donate money, food and clothing to those who require assistance. It is thought that by assisting others, positive outcomes return to you. Women who adhere to this Vrat aim to ensure their husbands’ well-being and health while also contributing to their family's prosperity.
