Vinayaka Chaturthi May 2025: Rituals

Before commencing Masik Vinayaka Ganesh Chaturthi, devotees wake up in the early morning hours and take a sacred bath. Wearing fresh clothes after a bath, they place an idol of Lord Ganesha at the puja altar. Next, they beautify the idol with new flowers and garlands and apply Chandan (sandalwood paste) on the Ganesha idol's forehead to make it ready for worship.

Then, devotees sprinkle some rice and put a Kalash (earthen vessel) containing sacred water on top of it. This significant step is referred to as Purna Kumbha Kalasha Sthapana. Once the Kalash is installed, they recite Lord Ganesha's mantras. Chanting at this stage is said to infuse life into the idol, a ritual called Prana Pratishtha. Devotees then get ready to offer prayers and make offerings to Lord Ganesha.

During the prayer, the devotees offer 21 modaks, 21 blades of Dhruva grass, incense sticks, coconut, sindoor (vermilion), camphor, Chandan, betel leaves, betel nuts and cotton wicks. They also recite Ganesh Stotra or hymns from the Ganapati Atharvashirsha Upanishad. At the end, devotees perform Ganesha Aarti and bow down before the lord to seek blessings.
