Vishu 2025 or Malayalam New Year marks the New Year for Malayali Natives in Kerala, Mahe and Tulu Nadu. It heralds the beginning of the spring season. This significant day is also celebrated in other Indian states as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Pohela Boishakh in West Bengal, Baisakhi in Punjab and Bihu in Assam. These celebrations mark the first day of the new month in their lunisolar calendars. Vishu marks the start of the Medam month in the Malayalam calendar. This year, Vishu will be celebrated on 14th April 2025.

According to local legends, Vishu commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. Devotees seek blessings of the divine lord on this day to bring positivity and prosperity into their lives.

Vishu 2025: Rituals
Individuals begin their day with the auspicious sighting of the Vishu Kani, a carefully arranged display that features Lord Krishna's idol, fruits and vegetables, konnapoovu flowers, a mirror, coins and a traditional lamp. Seeing the Vishu Kani is believed to bring good luck and happiness throughout the year.
On Vishu, people wear new clothes, burst firecrackers, visit temples and enjoy special feasts known as Sadya with their loved ones. Elders gift money to younger family members in a tradition called Vishu kaineettam. Performing charitable deeds is also considered auspicious on this day.
