Lord Kalki is the tenth and last prophesied incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to Vaishnava cosmology, he will arrive to bring an end to the Kali Yuga, one of the four eras in the unending cycle of existence (Krita).

According to the Puranas, Kalki is the avatar who, while riding a white horse and brandishing a blazing sword, rejuvenates existence by bringing an end to the darkest and most destructive time to eradicate adharma (unrighteousness) and usher in the Satya Yuga. Let us know more about this divine incarnation further.

What Does “Kalki” Mean?

Kalki is a mysterious term that may mean different things to different people. Probably, the name Kalki originated from the word Kala, meaning time. Kalki might therefore refer to the end of time, eternity, or the "one who will end time." In Sanskrit, the term Kalka also signifies dirt or filth. And Kalki might be the "Lord who will put an end to evil" or the "one who will destroy impurity."

What Is The Significance Of Kalki Avatar Of Lord Vishnu?

Since we are in the Kali Yuga, it is believed that evil will gradually overcome virtue. The world would eventually descend into such a state of chaos that pure evil would almost rule the planet and the virtuous would face extermination. It is believed that at that critical juncture, Lord Vishnu will take human form to destroy evil. With that, he will also essentially end time. Therefore, it is anticipated that Kalki's manifestation would bring an end to the present Kali Epoch, known as Kaliyuga, and usher in the virtue-filled Krita or Satya Yuga.

Mention Of Lord Kalki In Sacred Hindu Texts

Numerous historical texts discuss the arrival of the archetypal Kalki and the period of his embodiment. The Vishnu Purana is believed to have made the first mention of Kalki. Buddhist sacred books also include prophecies on Lord Kalki, including references to this incarnation and impending events in the Srimad Bhagavata Purana and Kalki Purana. Nevertheless, many of the facts offered are imprecise and vary greatly.

The sixth incarnation of the eternal Lord Vishnu is Parashurama. According to certain texts, this fierce warrior sage is anxious for Kalki to arrive so he may educate him about military science, combat, and weapon handling. Additionally, they believe that Kalki would follow Parashurama's teachings, undergo intense penance, acquire supernatural strength and weapons, destroy evildoers with a vengeance, institute virtuous rule, revive the honourable Satya Yuga, and eventually ascend to heaven in the form of Lord Vishnu.

Will Lord Kalki Take Birth In 2025?

Although two ancient texts give different dates for Kalki's arrival - "21 fortnights from Krishna's birth" and "Margashirsha month, Krishna Ashtami, 8th day after the full moon", modern scholars have attempted to reconcile these dates. Based on the fact that the current Kali Yuga, which is traditionally thought to last for 4,32,000 years, only started in 3102 BC, some calculations have also been made. This suggests that either Kalki Avatar is very far in the past or that a different interpretation of this anticipated incarnation is required.
