As per Hindu texts, Lord Ganesha stayed single for a long period. His unique look frequently caused uncertainty in the search for a compatible partner. Some legends enumerate that Lord Ganesha’s deep devotion to his mother, Goddess Parvati resulted in his lack of interest in marriage. Noticing his isolation and commitment, Lord Brahma decided to create two daughters – Riddhi and Siddhi, destined to be ideal companions for Ganesha. These two gods were not just partners but symbolic representations, reflecting prosperity (Riddhi) and spiritual power or success (Siddhi), thereby acting as perfect counterparts to Ganesha’s divine nature.
Another well-known version of the story recounts how Lord Kartikeya, who is Ganesha’s brother, was married before. To bring back harmony and prevent any sense of imbalance, the deities and wise men organised Ganesha’s wedding too. He was therefore wedded to both Riddhi and Siddhi and their union signified a balanced fusion of worldly and spiritual achievement. Tulsi Devi’s Curse To Lord Ganesha
Another intriguing tale recounts how Tulsi Devi witnessed Lord Ganesha intensely engaged in meditation and immediately developed feelings for him. Enchanted by his celestial aura, she moved closer and suggested they marry. Nevertheless, Lord Ganesha softly declined, stating his desire to stay celibate. Wounded and infuriated by the denial, Tulsi Ji condemned him, proclaiming he would have two marriages. Ganesha, in response, cursed her to transform into a plant, but subsequently blessed her to be regarded as sacred and vital in all Hindu ceremonies. This story introduces an unusual perspective on the motivations for Ganesha's two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi.
