Yam Deepak 2024: There is a significant custom of lighting Yam Deepak on Dhanteras and Naraka Chaturdashi before Diwali. In Hinduism, Yama, the god of death, is responsible for taking lives at their appointed time. Death is inevitable, but to avoid passing away prematurely, devotees worship Yama on specific days: Dhantrayodashi, Narak Chaturdashi, and Yamadwitiya. To honour Yama, an oil lamp (or thirteen lamps) made from wheat flour is lit in the evening. Unusually, the flame faces south - normally avoided in Hindu tradition. The lamps are placed outside the home, symbolising the warding off of untimely death. This ritual seeks to ensure a peaceful and timely passage of life, acknowledging Yama's role in the natural cycle of life and death.

Check out the shubh muhurat, correct direction and vidhi to light Yam Deepak on Dhanteras and Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi).

Yam Deepak 2024: Correct Direction To Light Yam Ka Diya

In Hindu tradition, lighting the Yam Deepak requires attention to direction. Typically, lamps are placed in the northeast or east direction, considered auspicious. However, on Dhanteras and Naraka Chaturdashi, the Yam Deepak is uniquely placed outside the home, facing southwards. This direction is usually avoided, but on these days, it's intentionally chosen to ward off untimely death. The southward-facing flame symbolises the lighting of the path for Lord Yama, guiding him away from the household. Ensure the lamp is placed on a clean surface, outside the main entrance, and facing south to honour the deity and seek protection from premature death. This ritual is believed to bring peace and prosperity.

To honour Lord Yama, create a wheat flour lamp during Pradosh Kaal in the evening, typically between 4:30-6:30 PM Prepare four wicks, place them in the lamp, and fill it with mustard oil. Sprinkle Ganges water around the lamp for purification. Position the lamp outside your main door, facing south, and place some grains underneath. Traditionally, some people place the Yam Deepak near a drain or other designated areas. After lighting the lamp, pray to Lord Yama with devotion, faith, and sincerity, seeking blessings for your family's well-being and prosperity. Request his protection and guidance, ensuring a peaceful and timely passage of life. With dedication and reverence, offer your prayers, and the Yam Deepak ritual is complete, bringing spiritual significance and protection to your household.
