The Indian men's 4x400m relay team clinched the gold medal at the Asian Games 2023, adding to India's remarkable performance in athletics in this year's edition in Hangzhou.

Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal Variyathodi, and Rajesh Ramesh clocked a national record time of 3:01.58 in the final. The Indian team won the silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in this event.

India qualified for the finals by clocking the fastest time of 3:03.81 minutes in heat 1 ahead of Qatar, Japan, and Iraq.

On the other hand, the women's 4x400m relay team, featuring Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi, and Subha Venkatesan, clinched the silver medal on Wednesday.

Despite beating the previous Asian Games record time (3:28.68 in 2014 Incheon), the Indian quartet was outrun by Bahrain, who ended up winning the gold medal with a new record time of 3:27.65. Sri Lanka completed the women's 4x400m relay team podium with a bronze.

The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team has been winning gold at the Asian Games since 2002 and has won at least a medal in this event since the 1982 Delhi Asiads.

Talking about the other events, Sarvesh Anil Kushare finished fourth in the men's high jump final at Hangzhou with a season-best of 2.26m. Jesse Sandesh finished the event being on the ninth position with a 2.19m best jump.

Earlier, India's star athlete Avinash Sable won his second medal in this year's showpiece event as he clinched a silver medal in the men's 5000m, clocking 13:21.09 in the final on Wednesday.

Gulveer Singh finished fourth with a time of 13:29.93. Birhanu Balew Yemataw clinched the gold medal with an Asian Games record time of 13:17.40 while Dawit Fikadu settled for silver with a season-best 13:25.63.

A few days ago, Sable had broken the men's 3000m steeplechase Asian Games record, en route to winning the gold medal.

Sheena Nellickal Varkey, on the other hand, finished sixth in the women's triple jump final with a best leap of 13.34m.
