Asian Games 2026: Reigning Olympic bronze medallists India produced a dominant performance to hammer Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final on Saturday, successfully defending their Asian Games gold medal and securing direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The victory also saw the eight-time Olympic champions write another historic chapter in Indian hockey. India clinched their fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold medal, while becoming the first Indian men’s team to win the title in consecutive editions.

Harmanpreet Leads India’s Dominant Show

India started aggressively, with the majority of the opening quarter played inside the Malaysian half. The pressure eventually paid off when captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 11th minute to give India the lead.

Malaysia responded through Shello Silverius, who scored from a field effort in the 14th minute to bring the contest level.

India, however, continued to apply pressure and restored their advantage through another penalty corner. This time it was Jugraj Singh who stepped up in the 23rd minute to make it 2-1.

The Indian defence then kept Malaysia at bay as the team continued to control proceedings and look for openings.

India Pull Away In Second Half

India extended their lead in the third quarter when vice-captain Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute.

With Malaysia struggling to match India's attacking intensity, Shilanand Lakra added another field goal in the 54th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

Harmanpreet then completed his brace in the 57th minute, converting another penalty corner to seal a comprehensive 5-1 victory for India.

Malaysia had to settle for the silver medal, while Pakistan claimed bronze after defeating South Korea 5-3 earlier on Saturday.

Historic Double For Indian Hockey

The men's triumph completed a remarkable double for Indian hockey at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

India's women's team had already ended a 44-year wait for the Asian Games gold, defeating reigning Olympic silver medallists and defending champions China 1-0 in Friday's final.

It means, for the first time, both India's men's and women's hockey teams have won gold medals at the same edition of the Asian Games.

The men's side also finally achieved a feat that had eluded previous generations — retaining the Asian Games hockey title.

India Finish Asian Games With 85 Medals

The men's hockey gold also provided a fitting conclusion to India's campaign at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya.

India finish the Games with 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals, taking their overall tally to 85 medals.
