Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the Portugal national team camp has raised fresh questions over whether the 41-year-old is set to call time on his international career following his reported fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus and the Portuguese Football Federation.

Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp after Jesus’ press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president Pedro Proenca.

The Portugal captain subsequently confirmed his decision in a social media post, but stopped short of announcing his retirement.

Ronaldo's Statement

“Following the National Coach's press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have made the decision to leave the National Team training camp,” Ronaldo said.

“In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons behind my departure from the national team, to which I have always been dedicated. Now it is time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception.”

Why Did Ronaldo Leave Portugal Camp?

The controversy began after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway. Jesus did not bring him on despite the forward warming up for around 30 minutes.

The coach later insisted there were no major problems between them and said Ronaldo had not refused to train. However, Jesus also made it clear that Ronaldo was not guaranteed a starting place under his management.

Ronaldo subsequently left the camp after Jesus’ press conference, with reports suggesting that tensions between the two had intensified.

The FPF confirmed Ronaldo’s departure but did not provide details about the reasons behind it.

Was Ronaldo Already Expected To Retire?

Adding another layer to the controversy, Spanish newspaper AS reported that the FPF had anticipated Ronaldo retiring after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to the report, Portuguese officials had been expecting the country’s all-time leading scorer to make that decision himself.

The report also claimed that José Mourinho, among the coaches considered during Portugal’s search for a new manager, was said to have wanted Ronaldo’s international career to end as part of his plans.

However, these are reported claims and there has been no official confirmation from Ronaldo or the FPF that he has retired.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo Retire From International Football?

For now, Ronaldo’s international future remains unclear. He has already confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup was his final appearance at the tournament, ending a six-World Cup career.

However, he did not announce his retirement from Portugal after the competition and had continued representing his country.

His latest statement also does not contain the word retirement. Instead, Ronaldo said he would reveal the truth behind his departure “in due time”.

Therefore, Ronaldo has left the Portugal camp, but he has not officially retired from international football.

His next statement could determine whether the current dispute marks a temporary break or the beginning of the end of his Portugal career.
