Japan's impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign continued on Thursday as the Samurai Blue battled to a hard-fought draw against Sweden to secure their place in the Round of 32 and finish runners-up in Group F.
Knowing a point would be enough to guarantee qualification, Hajime Moriyasu's side once again showed the composure and resilience that have defined their journey over the years.
Daizen Maeda's second-half opener looked set to hand Japan another memorable victory before Anthony Elanga produced a stunning equalizer. However, the Samurai Blue stood firm during late Swedish pressure to protect the result they needed.
The draw also ensured Sweden progressed to the knockout stage as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams, making the contest at Dallas Stadium significant.
Japan’s Rise in the World Cup
The Japan National Football team came into the match knowing they had to fight for qualification.
The Samurai Blue dominated possession from the opening exchanges, forcing Sweden deep into their own half while creating a series of promising opportunities. Daizen Maeda headed narrowly wide before Yukinari Sugawara forced Jacob Zetterstrom into action.
On the other hand, Keito Nakamura came closest to breaking the deadlock with a clever effort brilliantly pushed around the post by the Swedish goalkeeper.
Japan's persistence was finally rewarded shortly after the restart. Ritsu Doan threaded a measured through ball into the path of Maeda, who calmly put the ball beyond Zetterstrom to hand the Samurai Blue a deserved lead and move them a step closer to qualification.
Sweden, however, responded with determination. Just six minutes later, EPL sensation Anthony Elanga made a powerful strike from 20 yards that flew beyond Zion Suzuki to restore parity and gave confidence to his side.
The momentum briefly shifted towards the Scandinavians, but Suzuki produced two outstanding saves to deny Alexander Isak and Elanga, defending the point that ultimately sent both nations into the knockout rounds.
Unbeaten Japan Builds Momentum Before Brazil Test
The result means Japan completes the group stage unbeaten for the first time in FIFA World Cup history, continuing the consistency that has made them one of the tournament's most amazing teams.
Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki admitted the momentum swung after Sweden's equaliser but praised his teammates for staying composed and achieving what mattered most.
The goalkeeper believes carrying an unbeaten record into a daunting Round of 32 clash against Brazil gives Japan further confidence as they prepare for their biggest challenge yet.
Daizen Maeda also highlighted the influence of veteran Yuto Nagatomo, saying the experienced defender continues to unite the squad both on and off the pitch and has played a key role in Japan's impressive tournament run.
Sweden's Anthony Elanga, meanwhile, admitted he had hoped for victory but felt the draw was ultimately enough after another excellent performance from goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom helped secure qualification.
