Mexico football team’s dream FIFA World Cup 2026 journey gathered momentum as the co-hosts produced another fantastic performance to defeat Ecuador 2-0. As a result of which they march into the Round of 16 with their perfect record intact.
The Mexico City Stadium was flooded with Mexican supporters as Javier Aguirre's men outwitted Ecuador with an explosive first-half display. Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez ensured El Tri remained unbeaten. Mexico kept a clean sheet yet again, making it like their hobby more than a passion.

On the other hand, Ecuador national football team’s brilliant World Cup run was brought to an end after their heroic qualification from the group stage. Caicedo and company had simply no answers to Mexico's relentless attacks.
Mexico Blows Ecuador Away
After adverse weather delayed kick-off by an hour, Mexico wasted no time making up for lost minutes. The hosts came out strongly as Gilberto Mora, Luis Romo and Raul Jimenez all threatened inside the opening stages. Mora continued to torment the Ecuador defence with his energetic runs.
Ecuador nearly stunned the home crowd when John Yeboah hit against the outside of the post in the 18th minute, but Mexico responded almost immediately.
Roberto Alvarado's perfectly weighted pass released Julian Quinones, who timed his run brilliantly before smashing an unstoppable finish beyond Hernan Galindez in the 22nd minute. Wild celebrations erupted inside Mexico City Stadium and fans were up on their feet.
The hosts doubled their advantage just nine minutes later. Quiñones provided the assist this time, slipping Raúl Jiménez through on goal. The veteran striker calmly finished to put Mexico firmly in control before half-time.
Ecuador Bow Out Proudly
Mexico never looked troubled after the interval. Led wonderfully by Cesar Montes and Johan Vasquez at the defense, El Tri comfortably restricted Ecuador's attacks while goalkeeper Raul Rangel extended his impressive run to four consecutive World Cup clean sheets.
Montes and Vasquez even came close to adding a third goal from set-pieces, underlining Mexico's dominance at both ends of the pitch.
Ecuador's frustrating evening ended on a sour note in stoppage time when Piero Hincapié received a red card following an argument with Santiago Giménez. With the new laws in the game, the match official reviewed the incident and went for a straight red.
Despite the defeat, Ecuador leaves the tournament having shown fantastic football. They recovered from a difficult start to reach the knockout stage before finally meeting a Mexico side full of confidence.
John Yeboah admitted the atmosphere played a major role in the contest. "I think the whole crowd is on their back, I think that gives them a lot of push. We had that same energy against Germany, so we kind of know how that feels. Obviously, we're devastated," the Ecuador midfielder stated.
Mexico, meanwhile, continues to grow stronger with every performance and will return to Mexico City Stadium for a Round of 16 clash against the winners of England versus DR Congo.
