India's possible historic achievements at Paris Olympics 2024: India have had its moments at the Olympics and have witnessed limited success so far with the country's best performance coming in the previous edition three years ago.
India had its best Olympic outing at Tokyo Games 2020 with a record tally of seven medals including one gold, two silver and four bronze.
India sent its biggest contingent ever at an Olympic edition in Tokyo, with 126 competitors participating in several events.
In a historic instance at the Tokyo Olympics, India got its first-ever gold medal in track and field when the star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra finished at the top of the podium.
Every medal at the sport's biggest extravaganza is a signature moment for athletes as those moments get etched in the history books.
While Indian sports has celebrated some spectacular firsts over the years at the Olympic Games and with the Paris Games upon us, some more accolades are in line to be achieved.
Despite having a shorter contingent of 117 athletes at the Paris Olympics 2024, history is likely to be created with some first-ever monumental achievements for the country at the sport's biggest stage.
Take a look at some big firsts India can achieve at the Paris Games.
More than one gold
India have never won more than a gold medal at a single edition of the Olympic Games with the latest coming in the previous edition in Tokyo.
Out of 35 total Olympic Medals India have won so far, 10 have been gold which came in the years 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, 1980, 2008 and 2020.
With some big names participating in events like boxing, badminton, wrestling and a few others, a historic instance could take place with India's first-ever outing with more than one gold medal.
Indian men's hockey team and Neeraj Chopra will also be looking to finish at the top of the podium.
First individual with two gold medals
Neeraj Chopra has nearly won it all since scripting history at the Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a monumental gold medal achievement.
Once again the star boy of Indian sports will be a favourite heading into the men's javelin throw event and could become the first-ever individual participant from the country to win two gold medals.
First female athlete gold medallist
India's female athletes have delivered consistently in the past few editions of the sport's biggest event.
Having won bronze and silver multiple times with memorable performances across events, this will be the time India can be its first-ever female athlete with a gold medal.
The likes of Nikhat Zareen, Lovlina Borgohain in Boxing, Manika Batra in Table Tennis, PV Sindhu in Badminton and a few others across events can end the long wait for India in this edition.
First boxing gold medal
India have won three medals in boxing so far with Vijender Singh winning bronze in 2008 whereas Mary Kom doubled the tally in 2012 before Lovlina Borgohain made it three in the previous edition.
India will have the world champion Nikhat Zareen up front, who will be aiming to finish at the top of the podium and with the likes of in-form Amit Panghal (men's 51kg) and Jasmine Lamboria (women's 57kg) bolstering the squad, India can have it's first-ever boxing gold medal.
First Badminton gold
Badminton has produced some memorable success stories for India in the last decade with three medals coming in the Olympic Games as well so far.
Saina Nehwal won the bronze at London 2012 before PV Sindhu bagged back-to-back medals for the country. She won silver in Rio 2016 and came up with a bronze in Tokyo.
With some big stars like HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Sindhu and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty named in India's squad in their respective categories, the country could get its first-ever gold in badminton.
First athlete to win three individual medals
PV Sindhu (badminton) and Sushil Kumar (Wrestling) are the only two Indian athletes to have won two individual Olympic medals.
Sushil won a bronze in Men's 66kg wrestling at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and doubled the tally with a silver in 2012.
Sindhu also won her medals in successive editions, winning a silver in the Rio Olympics om 2016 and a bronze at the Tokyo Olympics.
However, the star badminton player will have a chance to add a third to her tally and become the first-ever Indian athlete to win three individual medals.
Double-digit medals
India's best outing at the Olympics came at the Tokyo Games 2020, winning seven medals in total.
The tally could not only increase but also reach double-digit for the first time ever.
With some star players and world-class performers aiming to capitalise, India could reach or even surpass the 10-medal mark at the Paris Olympics 2024.
