Spain and Argentina went into half-time level at 0-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday (July 19). While there were no goals in the opening 45 minutes, Spain captain Rodri still found a way to make history.
The midfielder completed 50 passes in the first half, taking his overall World Cup tally to 1,343 successful passes.
According to Opta Stats, that is now the highest number of completed passes by any player in FIFA World Cup history. Rodri moved ahead of former Brazil captain Dunga, who finished his World Cup career with 1,306 completed passes.

Rodri has also set another remarkable record at the 2026 tournament. He has completed 698 passes so far, the most by any player in a single FIFA World Cup edition.
The 30-year-old bettered his own previous record of 638 completed passes, which he registered during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Before Rodri rewrote the record books, the best single-tournament mark belonged to Spain legend Xavi, who completed 599 passes as Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Among players at the ongoing tournament, Rodri’s closest competitors are his Spain teammates Pau Cubarsí with 547 completed passes and Aymeric Laporte with 533.
