Spain vs Argentina: Why Referee Ruled Out Nico Williams’ Goal in FIFA World Cup Final

Spain thought they had found the breakthrough in extra time of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Argentina when Nico Williams bundled the ball into the net. However, the celebrations were cut short as referee Slavko Vinčić immediately ruled the goal out for a foul in the build-up.

The decision proved to be one of the biggest talking points of the World Cup final, with Spanish players and supporters left furious after VAR upheld the on-field call.

Why Was Nico Williams' Goal Disallowed?

The incident occurred in the 96th minute of extra time. Following a dangerous delivery into the penalty area, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez managed to parry the ball into a crowded six-yard box. Williams reacted quickest and tapped the loose ball into the net, seemingly giving Spain the lead.

However, before the ball crossed the line, referee Vinčić had already blown his whistle after spotting an infringement in the build-up.

Replays showed that Spain midfielder Mikel Merino stepped on the foot of Argentina defender Nicolás Otamendi inside the penalty area while competing for position. The contact caused Otamendi to lose his balance, prompting the referee to award Argentina a defensive free-kick.

Why Did VAR Not Overturn The Decision?

Although many viewers felt the contact was accidental and minimal, the Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident and decided there was no clear and obvious error in Vinčić's original decision.

Under the Laws of the Game, a goal cannot stand if an attacking player commits a foul during the attacking phase leading directly to the goal. Since Merino's challenge was judged to have illegally impeded Otamendi before the cross reached Williams, the goal was correctly ruled out under the current interpretation of the laws.

Because the referee had already stopped play for the foul, VAR's role was limited to checking whether the decision was clearly incorrect. After reviewing the footage, the officials confirmed the on-field call, meaning the goal remained disallowed.

Decision Sparks Controversy

The ruling immediately sparked heated reactions from Spain's players, who surrounded the referee in protest. Supporters inside the stadium also voiced their frustration, believing the contact was too slight to warrant a foul and arguing that the goal should have stood.

Despite the controversy, the officials maintained their decision, with the disallowed strike ensuring the World Cup final remained level during extra time.
