US Open 2024: World No.1 Jannik Sinner on Sunday scripted history after he became the first Italian to win the US Open men’s singles crown. Sinner delivered a high-quality display to dash home hope Taylor Fritz’s title dreams and showcased his eye-catching performance to outplay the American 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to lift the trophy at the US Open.
An enthusiastic crowd filled Arthur Ashe Stadium to witness the historic moment of Taylor Fritz becoming the first American men's singles finalist in 18 years. However, Sinner quickly dulled the spirit of American fans with a collected and clear performance, characterised by intense serving and crisp baseline shots.
"This title for me means so much; the last period of my career was not easy. There is my team who supports me every day, the people who are close to me," Sinner said after the triumph as quoted by ATP.
"I love tennis, I practise a lot for these kind of stages, but off the court there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt who is really not feeling well health wise. I don't know how much I'll still have her in my life. It's so nice I can still share a positive moment with her," he added.

Sinner set the stage early with a strong forehand winner, breaking Fritz's serve in the opening game. Although Fritz drove to level the score at 2-2, Sinner held power throughout the first set, dictating the pace of the match.
Sinner's approach was crystal clear from the beginning: to take advantage of Fritz's fault by pushing him wide and preventing him from holding the middle of the court.
Due to Fritz's flawed first serve percentage in the first set, which was only 38 per cent, Sinner was able to break through twice and take a commanding lead. Fritz was able to rediscover his serve in the second set, but Sinner took advantage of a temporary error in the eleventh game. Sinner returned a backhand winner down the line with outstanding accuracy, pushing Fritz to make a mistake and making the vital break to get within one set of winning the championship.

A star-studded crowd rallied behind Fritz, wishing for a miraculous comeback, but Sinner swiftly smashed those hopes with a predominant display in the third set. As Fritz's forehand floated into the net on the final point, Sinner jubilantly lifted his arms, basking in the glory of his groundbreaking achievement.
