India’s efforts to establish itself as a global semiconductor manufacturing powerhouse have just received a big push, with Adani Group and Tower Semiconductor having announced a massive $10 billion (approximately Rs. 83,958 crore) investment for a new chip manufacturing plant in Maharashtra.

The development was announced by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde via a post on X on Thursday and is a big step forward for the country’s semiconductor aspirations.

Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the new semiconductor facility will begin operations with a capacity of 40,000 wafers, potentially making it one of the largest chip-manufacturing investments made in India.

The project is the latest diversification into infrastructure by billionaire Gautam Adani, who already runs everything from ports to power generation and transmission, as well as airports and coal trading. With the addition of semiconductor manufacturing, they now gain a strategically important segment.

India’s Semiconductor Ambitions

India has been wooing global chipmakers as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream to make the country a chipmaker to the world. The journey has been bumpy, with Foxconn pulling out of a proposed $19.5 billion semiconductor joint venture with Vedanta last year and delays in ISMC’s $3 billion project, but the government is upbeat.

India is aiming for its semiconductor market to reach $63 billion (roughly Rs. 5.29 lakh crore) by 2026, led by demand from smartphones, electric vehicles, data centres and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Apart from semiconductors, the Maharashtra government has given a go-ahead to projects worth Rs. 1.17 trillion on Thursday that are likely to create aproximately 29,000 jobs.

The state will also benefit from major investments in charging infrastructure and the production of electric and hybrid vehicles:

- Skoda-Volkswagen to pump in Rs. 15,000 crore to produce electric and hybrid cars

- Toyota Kirloskar will invest Rs 21,273 crore to scale up RI and EV production at its plant in Maharashtra.

The Adani–Tower Semiconductor project is being pitched at a time when global supply chains are being remoulded, and nations are competing to localise chip production for economic and national security reasons. If completed on schedule, the Maharashtra facility could be instrumental in helping India to reduce its reliance on semiconductor imports and expanding its standing within the world’s electronics supply chain.
