Adobe announced on Monday that it is releasing the capabilities of Acrobat AI Assistant to billions of Acrobat Reader customers. The assistant will be available on the web and desktop via an add-on subscription and is live for smartphone users via a beta trial. The AI assistant can summarise and answer queries about documents. It can also supply citations and can generate and format content.
Acrobat AI Assistant will be a part of the Reader and Acrobat as a conversational generative AI engine. It can allow users to chat conversationally with AI for insights and formatting while improving productivity. According to Adobe, the assistant can further improve productivity in Word, PowerPoint, transcripts and more.

"AI Assistant recommends questions based on a PDF's content and answers questions about what's in the document through an intuitive conversational interface," Adobe said. For long documents, it can generate short overviews (similar to summaries) to help users understand the crux in less time.

Adobe also uses proprietary technology (and a custom attribution engine) to generate citations so that readers can locate the source of the information provided by AI. Moreover, customers can consolidate and format information for varying use cases in emails, documents, reports and more. The 'copy' button can be used to share and create content.
Adobe said that the data from customer documents is not "stored or used to train AI Assistants without consent". The company shared diverse use cases of Acrobat AI Assistant, such as summarising takeaways from meeting transcripts, exploring key findings in research, preparing study guides and locating technical information from long documents.
"Adobe is bringing Acrobat AI Assistant to all surfaces with the introduction of mobile and web extensions," the company said. Users can use AI Assistant in beta in Acrobat Reader mobile via voice commands. Alternatively, you can use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge extensions of Acrobat.
The Acrobat AI Assistant is available with "free Reader or paid Acrobat for individual plans [with]...a new AI Assistant add-on subscription." The early access pricing is $4.99 per month until June 5, 2024. "AI Assistant on Reader mobile (beta) is available in English for free for a limited time directly in the Reader mobile app," the company said.
