Photoshop is integrating AI technology further with new tools that aim to reduce time-consuming tasks to mere seconds. Their primary offering is Harmonize which automatically integrates objects in scenes with breathtaking detail. Other new features include an upscaler that increases resolution with AI and updates to object removal that AI gap filling with higher precision. All features are in beta for desktop, web, and iOS.

Harmonize: Automatic Object Blending Using AI

One of the most difficult tasks in Photoshop has always been blending: adding adjustments to colours, lighting, shadows, and tones for elements that are integrated so that they appear seamlessly in the composition. Harmonize, one of the new tools provided by Adobe’s Firefly Image model, helps with automating these tasks.

Currently, in beta for desktop and web and with early access on iOS.

It automatically harmonizes the colours and light combinations of the shadows and visuals of objects that are added on.

Harmonize the colour blending steps, which saves time for realistic digital artworks and photorealistic compositions.

The focus is to address the steep learning curve, alleviating the burden for casual and beginner users of the software as well as professionals.

Generative Upscale: AI-Powered Image Enhancement

Easily overlooked, the new Generative Upscale tool stands out for its ability to enhance images up to 8MP with the use of generative AI, maintaining clarity and eliminating the introduction of artifacts during processing.

Currently available in beta for both desktop and web versions of Photoshop.

Achieves higher resolution with no loss of detail, distortion, or blurring.

Addresses, for many, the most requested feature for Photoshop.

This tool mitigates the need for external tools or plugins to upscale lower resolution images for print, web, or portfolio-quality visuals.

Remove Tool Gets a Precision Upgrade

With the latest Firefly Image model, Adobe is enhancing its already popular remove tools, making the deletion of unwanted objects and background features within images faster and more accurate.

Faster and more accurate background and element removal.

Remove tools now fills the void with realistic AI generated imagery.

Available on both desktop and web versions.

This takes us a little closer to the elusive one-click object removal workflow that does not result in the residue of odd looking patches or visual continuity breaks.

Other Useful Features in the Pipeline

In addition to features powered by AI, Adobe is making some updates that make practical improvements to workflow, including:

1. Projects (Beta) – Desktop Only

Allows users to share complete project collections instead of sharing files individually.

Benefits collaborative workflows and is useful for teams.

2. Gen AI Model Picker – Desktop

A new dropdown for switching between use Firefly Image 1 and Image 3 models.

Increases user control and flexibility when using Generative Fill and Generative Expand.

All changes made in these versions of Photoshop are centered towards workflows and user flexibility to promote ease of use from all angles.

Final Thoughts

Adobe is making Photoshop focus more on Generative AI technologies, making the software friendlier while retaining the abundance of features it has preferred for in the past.
