Microsoft is now publicly testing the Copilot for gaming, an AI chatbot aimed at enriching the gaming experience on Xbox. It is accessible through the beta version of the Xbox app for Android and iOS in select regions. The AI functions as a secondary screen that interacts with users, offering personalised suggestions, tips, and helping them manage their accounts.
What Is Copilot for Gaming?
Copilot for Gaming is an AI assistant that is aware of context. It employs Xbox activity data, such as play histories, achievements, and accounts, to respond to users. It also fetches information online to aid users in their gaming activities.
Primary capabilities include:
- In-game assistance (e.g. defeating a boss, and crafting an item)
- Recommended games based on a user's play history or preferences
- Account-related inquiries, like checking Xbox achievements and subscriptions
- Compatible Devices and Locations
The initial beta is restricted to 18 years and older, and users of the Xbox app beta on:

The AI chatbot has not been deployed in the EU and the UK. Microsoft confirmed that these regions will be added later.
Formulated as a Non-Intrusive Assistant
Copilot for Gaming is approached as a second screen add-on which enables the player to call on the AI Assistant on their phones or tablets while gaming on Xbox or PC without pause. This is designed to enhance support and eliminate interference, which Microsoft is keen on prioritising.
Practical Examples: How Gamers Might Use Copilot
Example interactions are:
- “What materials do I need to make a sword in Minecraft?”
- “Which wizarding game should I play next after Hogwarts Legacy?”
- “What game do you recommend I try next?”
- “What are the details for my Exchange Game Pass Subscription?”
Feedback Phase Is Here
Beta testers for Copilot for Gaming have already been invited to provide feedback, indicating sustained changes due to user interaction.
Microsoft’s AI Drive Now Includes Gaming
With Microsoft’s introduction of Copilot for Gaming, the company is now extending their Copilot name into gaming, adding to the already existing productivity, developer-focused AI. As with most things at Microsoft, this shift seems to be aimed at adding AI functionality to every possible user interaction.
As this feature develops, it may turn into a standard for gamers on Xbox looking for real-time assistance, suggestions for new games to play, and effortless management of their accounts through AI.
