Apple’s artificial intelligence story is slow-moving and, at times, awkward. But a new report says that in 2026, the company could finally pivot and successfully establish itself as a serious AI player.
Apple may launch its AI-powered Siri in Spring 2026: Apple reportedly has long been promising to make its AI-integrated virtual personal assistant, and finally the public could experience a major turning point in the company’s strategy for using artificial intelligence.
Why Apple Fell Behind in AI
Apple got into the AI game far later than its competitors. OpenAI set off the current boom in AI with ChatGPT in late 2022, but by 2023, companies like Microsoft and Google were making moves. By the end of that year, even risk-averse firms Amazon and Meta had built AI platforms.
Apple, by contrast, didn’t announce Apple Intelligence until March 2024 and features were only trickling out toward the end of the year. Products like Writing Tools, Genmoji and Clean Up were deemed useful but lacklustre in the context of what competitors offer. The AI Transparency reports are being recalled and Siri, as just mentioned, persisting in its unimproved state, has only continued to damage Apple’s reputability with regard to AI.
What Changes in 2026
But even as 2024 got a bit rocky last year and was relatively quiet this year, most of the critical building blocks are now in place, it says—thanks to Apple.
Important positive trends for Apple include:
- Private Cloud Compute (PCC), made for secure and private execution of AI workloads
- Unmatched on-device natural language processing with Apple-designed A14 chips featuring dedicated Neural Engines
- Strategic partnerships such as OpenAI, Anthropic and reported conversations with Google
- A team of experienced AI researchers with a track record in publishing multiple papers on model efficiency and safety
And with the infrastructure in place, Apple is free to move on from laying groundwork to execution.
Turning Point: The AI-Powered Siri Its name might sound more like a birth control option (AI as assistant!) than the tech revolution that followed, but when Apple released Siri with its iOS 5 update in 2011, it launched the modern age of personal virtual assistants.
According to the report, Spring 2026 (when Apple will most likely debut its completely AI-based Siri) will be Apple’s real moment of AI triumph. This new Siri would be based on large language models, with much more profound contextual comprehension, reasoning and task planning compared to the current one.
If Apple can follow through on that promise, Siri would finally start to be more than just a glorified voice assistant and become an essential AI interface across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and wearables.

The Bigger Picture
Apple will not have an OpenAI-style or Google-esque AI plan. Instead, the company seems to be concentrating on
- Privacy-first AI
- Deep system-level integration
- Practical, everyday wisdom on all devices
Whether that approach will be enough to catch up with—or possibly overtake—competitors remains to be seen. But if the report is true, 2026 could be the year Apple’s worn-out game of follow-the-leader gives way to its own agenda in AI research.
