Apple announced its iOS 17.1 update with a range of features and enhancements. In the latest move, the company is preparing to release its iOS 17.2 update. And the most awaited feature of the latest iOS may debut with the software this year. We are discussing the option to sideload apps from sources other than the official App Store.
According to a 9To5Mac report, there were strings of codes discovered in the iOS 17.2 beta update to enable the feature. For the unversed, the tech giant is pressed by the European Union's Digital Markets Act rules to let users install apps from third-party stores to improve competition.
The option to sideload apps has been available on Android smartphones for years. Other than the installation of apps from the official app store (Google Play Store), the option allows apps from third-party sources, such as custom app stores and websites, to run on the device. The Cupertino-based tech giant has not allowed the process. But with the move, this could change.

Among the provisions of the DMA legislation is the option to let users install apps from third-party sources. Based on the analysis of the report, the application programming interface's extension endpoint allowed apps to create extensions of a new public framework. When explored further, the option to install apps from various sources was discovered.
This will enable developers to create custom app stores. The API offers basic controls for downloads, installation, and updating applications from other sources. The option to check app compatibility with an iOS version will also be available in the build.
Readers must note that the option will likely be restricted to some regions. Apple is expected to comply with the legislation by March 2024. On a related note, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to get Spatial Video support in the upcoming iOS 17.2 build. You can read about the feature here.
