A majority of people across the globe have encountered a period when their smartphone was drenched in liquids. And a widely circulated advice on social media is to send it inside a bowl or packet full of rice. However, Apple thinks otherwise. According to the tech giant, a wet iPhone should not be sent inside a bag of rice. It adds that this may damage the handset due to the mini particles that may intervene inside the ports and inlets.

For the unaware, devices like iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later can notify when liquid is detected in the charging connector. If this happens, two cases may prevail, either the charging port or the cable connectors are wet. This ensures that the connection is delinked between the two until the ports are dry.

Apple noted charging an iPhone in the presence of moisture inside ports can corrode the pins and may induce permanent damage. While it is not recommended, users have the option to override this warning by reconnecting the cable and charging in an emergency.

If your iPhone gets wet, unplug all electricity connections from the phone. You can gently tap the phone against your hand with the charging port facing down and leave the phone to dry. Try charging after 30 minutes to check if the liquid detection prompt appears. If it shows up again, leave the iPhone in an airy and dry environment for a minimum of 24 hours. You can try reconnecting your adaptor and cable to check if charging restarts after this.

Next to rice, Apple also recommends that users should not dry their phones via an "external heat source or compressed air." Secondly, users must not insert "foreign object" that includes cotton swab, paper towels and more inside the connector. If the warning continues to appear even after following the above process, you must contact Apple's customer support to get it checked for permanent damage.
