Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has not announced a foldable device to date. As its closest rival Samsung gears up for the sixth generation of foldables, it seems Apple is also cooking something behind the scenes. According to The Elec, Apple is working on a foldable device, the screen of which could measure in the range of 7-inch to 8-inch. It could be a folding iPhone or iPad.

As per the report, the device could launch in 2026 or 2027. The device could be the tech giant's first foldable. It may replace the Apple iPad mini, which has a screen size of under 9 inches. The tech giant has not yet finalised the specifications of the device, according to the report. Plus, the Display units of Samsung and LG reportedly shipped samples of the foldable panels to the company in 2023.

While a viewpoint of replacing the iPad mini exists, the company might not do so as it is reportedly working on an OLED display for the device. Samsung may likely end up producing panels for the foldable device. Plus, the South Korean giant has an edge in terms of experience in building displays for foldables compared to LG Display. However, some speculations hint that LG could also get a pie in mass production.

The Elec noted that all three involved companies are considering Ultrathin Glass (UTG). However, readers must digest the details with a pinch of salt as none of the involved companies have made an official statement. On top of this, the report noted that the sub-8-inch foldable may be followed with an OLED MacBook and a 20+ inch folding device.

For the unaware, 2027 will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone and the 10th anniversary of an OLED model in the lineup. This could be the golden time when Apple may introduce these sweeping changes.
