With the rumoured MacBook Ultra, Apple might be preparing a new category of premium laptop — The report stated that the firm could launch a premium MacBook with an OLED display and touch screen functionality, which would be a drastic change in its laptop portfolio. The new device is rumoured to be positioned above the current MacBook Pro lines and could become Apple’s highest-end laptop yet. The company has yet to confirm the development, but reports have indicated that it could be announced later this year.
In the newest column of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said Apple’s next OLED touchscreen MacBook may not be a new version of the MacBook Pro.
Instead, Apple could, in fact, launch an entirely brand-new MacBook positioned above the already relatively high-end line of MacBook Pros. Gurman describes the upcoming machine as a “touch-screen and OLED high-end MacBook", indicating it might fall into a new premium tier of Apple-branded laptops.
A launch would also allow Apple to extend its MacBook lineup into more premium price points, which could help differentiate the MacBook Pro as the main professional laptop line.

Fastest MacBook with OLED Display and Touch
The alleged MacBook Ultra would also come with Apple's first OLED display on a MacBook, as well as touch screen functionality.
Earlier stories indicated Apple releasing touch support and OLED panels on future MacBook Pro models running M6-series chips, which could be in stores by late 2026.
But the report insists that new features in question could appear in a completely new model instead of extending to the MacBook Pro family.
Optional Price Hike With OLED Technology
Apple adopting OLED displays could also mean the new laptop comes with a higher price tag.
Apple, as per Gurman, also raised the price by 20 per cent when it introduced OLED displays on products like the following:
- iPhone X in 2017
- iPad Pro in 2024
Such pricing could also see the anticipated MacBook Ultra penetrate further into the upper segment of laptops.
‘Ultra’ Branding May Indicate Top-End Positioning
It could also sport the “Ultra” branding, like the Apple Watch Ultra, to further emphasise its status as the top-end MacBook.
While the finalised name hasn’t been confirmed, MacBook Ultra branding would clearly signal that the device is a step beyond Apple’s current MacBook Pro lineup.
The new MacBook is tipped to launch in the second half of this year. Apple has not confirmed the development or given any details on specifications, pricing, etc.
