Apple announced the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Watch Ultra 2 at the mega 'Wonderlust' showcase next to the Apple iPhone 15 series and new USB-C AirPods. While announcing the new wrist offerings, the company hyped its double tap feature, which is rolling out for users with the release of the watchOS 10.1 update.

According to Apple's press release, users can accomplish a wide range of tasks on their Apple Watch without touching the screen using a single-handed operation mechanism. A wearer can tap the thumb and index finger two times to command the Apple Watch to perform multiple functions.

This feature is helpful in cases where the second hand of the wearer is occupied. Users can respond to calls, open Smart Stack, scroll widgets, view messages, play audio, snooze alarms, manage a timer and stopwatch and more functions.Apple watchOS 10.1 UI features (Image:Apple)

Other features highlighted in the release note include NameDrop for select eligible Apple Watches. Plus, bugs in the Home app's climate section, scroll bar not visible in some cases and more have been addressed in the update. This will further help improve the experience of Apple's premium wrist devices.

Apple watchOS 10.1 Features: Double Tap Gesture Availability

Apple's watchOS 10.1 is rolling out for Watch Series 4 and above devices and requires an iOS 17 running device to function. The double tap gesture is available on the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. Both offerings run on the S9 SiP CPU.

While enabled by default, you can switch off double tap from the settings. It is not available in "ECG, Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen, Sleep Focus, Walkie-Talkie, Maps (during navigation), Mindfulness (during an active session), SOS features (Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, Crash Detection), and Workout (during an active session)."
