Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is reportedly gearing up to announce AI features for its devices like the iPhone, iPad and Mac at its upcoming WWDC 2024 event. Some of these features may be backed by servers running on the company's in-house processors as a part of the effort to join the AI race. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, these high-end chipsets could be similar to the ones found on the Mac.

As per the report, this computing server will process highly advanced AI tasks on Apple products. As per sources cited in the report, other relatively less complicated features may be processed on-device without cloud dependence. This could be amongst the company's attempts to catch up with AI innovations sparked by OpenAI. Google and Samsung are among the latest names integrating AI features into their hardware products like smartphones.

The new features could see the light of day on June 10 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024. As per Gurman, the first AI server chips will be last year's M2 Ultra, powering the Mac Pro and Mac Studio. For context, the company is reportedly working to bring M4 processors to its PC lineup. Simpler tasks like summarising missed notifications or texts could be managed via a chip inside the device.

On the other hand, complicated tasks such as generating images and summarising long articles and emails may use AI to process the output. The revamped Siri could depend on the cloud for output. The tech giant could be betting big on on-device processing because of its long track record of protecting the privacy and security of users.

However, the report noted the company may depend on third-party cloud service providers for the purpose, Luca Maestri, Apple's Chief Financial Officer, hinted at the latest earnings call. Handling some of the on-device AI features will require the latest chipsets on an iPhone or iPad, and the company will focus on use of these features in daily life.
