iOS Update: The Indian government’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a warning for iPhone and iPad users about a serious security flaw. This vulnerability affects devices running iOS and iPadOS versions earlier than 18.3.1 and could leave users exposed to unauthorized access and potential data theft. If you're using an iPhone or iPad, it’s important to update your device as soon as possible to stay safe.
What’s the Issue?
Cybersecurity experts recently discovered that this flaw impacts various Apple devices, including iPhones from the XS model onward and iPads from the 7th generation and later. It allows attackers to bypass USB Restricted Mode, which is meant to block unauthorized access to your device through the Lightning port.
Which Devices Are Affected?
The vulnerability affects iPhones and iPads running iOS and iPadOS versions older than 18.3.1 or 17.7.5, depending on the model. Specifically, the affected devices are:
iPhone XS and newer
iPad Pro 13-inch, 12.9-inch 3rd generation and newer
iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and newer
iPad Air 3rd generation and newer
iPad 7th generation and newer
iPad mini 5th generation and newer
How Can You Protect Your Device?
To avoid putting your personal data at risk, follow these steps to update your iPhone or iPad:
Back Up Your Data: Before updating, back up your device to iCloud or your computer to keep your data safe.
Connect to Wi-Fi and Power: Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi and plugged into a charger to prevent interruptions during the update process.
Check for Updates: Head to Settings > General > Software Update to see if an update is available.
For future security, you can turn on Automatic Updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update and enabling this feature. This will ensure your device automatically gets the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
The best way to stay secure is to update your device right away, as this will safeguard your information and protect you from the risk of unauthorized access.
