Just days after facing backlash over Grok’s 3D animated companions — which some users criticised as overly sexualised — Elon Musk has introduced a more family-friendly direction for the chatbot. On Saturday, July 19, the xAI CEO announced the launch of Baby Grok, an upcoming version of the AI designed specifically for children.

"We're going to make Baby Grok @xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content," Mr Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Baby Grok is expected to be a simplified version of the existing Grok chatbot, focusing on safe and educational interactions for younger users. While Musk didn’t go into specifics about how Baby Grok would differ from the standard model, the move appears to be a response to growing concerns about the kind of language and responses children might be exposed to.

Grok, which was launched by xAI in 2023 as Musk’s answer to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Llama, is known for its edgy personality and, at times, explicit language. It’s even programmed to deliver foul-mouthed replies if prompted. The new kid-focused version is aimed at avoiding that kind of content entirely.

Social Media Users React

The announcement sparked positive reactions online, particularly from parents.

"Instant favourite in every family home," one user posted.

Another said, "Much needed. I have to let my kids use my app right now over ChatGPT."

A third user commented, "Thank you!!!!! My daughter has been wanting to play with it, but I wouldn't let her."

Grok’s Rapid Development and Controversies

Grok has been evolving quickly. Earlier this month, xAI released Grok 4, only months after its previous version. Musk has made bold claims about its capabilities, especially in academic and reasoning tasks.

"With respect to academic questions, Grok 4 is better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions," said Mr Musk during the launch. "At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time."

Grok 4 came shortly after controversy erupted when the chatbot was found to be generating antisemitic responses — an issue that brought strong criticism and prompted calls for better content moderation.

Currently, Grok offers three user modes — DeepSearch, Think, and Big Mind — which vary the depth of response depending on user preference.

With Baby Grok on the horizon, Musk appears to be positioning xAI for broader adoption, especially among families and younger users, by offering a more controlled and age-appropriate AI experience.
