Bharat GPT: Soon after Ola announced its Krutrim AI, it is time that India gear up for another in-house AI model. This time, telecom service provider Jio is working on its 'Bharat GPT' programme, which the company may launch soon. Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, said the company is working with Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay on this project, according to news agency PTI.
Ambani added at the Techfest event of the institute that the company continues to "comprehensively think" to launch its in-house operating systems for TVs with an attempt to build "an ecosystem of development" while iterating the efforts towards "Jio 2.0" vision, according to the report. While he emphasised the project, the partnership between Jio and IIT Bombay dates back to 2014.
"We have been working on a project with IIT Bombay to launch a Bharat GPT programme," he said. According to the news outlet, he also iterated that while large language models are comparatively new to people, the upcoming decade will be defined by generative AI and LLMs and it will transform every segment of a product and a service. "We are working very hard to launch AI not only as a vertical inside our organisation but also horizontally across all our sectors," Ambani added.

Jio will also introduce products and services across commerce, communication, media, and other sectors. One such project is Jio's TV OS. The process to launch it is in the pipeline. Moreover, the company will offer 5G private networks via 5G stack to enterprises regardless of their size. Ambani also labelled India as the "biggest innovation centre" for the next decade. He exuded confidence in India becoming a $6 trillion economy by this decade's end.
Coming back to Bharat GPT, the AI project aims to offer solutions for the business sectors, according to HT Tech. The special Bharat GPT consortium will use generative AI to integrate "cutting-edge technologies with Bharat's rich heritage" into the model. These foundational models will likely be multimodal and offer multi-lingual support for India-specific solutions. It will adhere to complexities in the country's context.
