Donald Trump’s re-election as President of the United States has sparked mixed reactions across the country. While his staunch supporters celebrate his victory, others remain deeply concerned about his leadership style and controversial policies. Adding to the drama, billionaire and world's richest man Elon Musk has openly expressed support for Trump, citing his policies as pro-business. Musk’s stance has drawn significant backlash, with critics accusing him of overlooking Trump's contentious track record. However, Musk remained unfazed by the criticism and has also been selected to head the Department Of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
While Musk personally is not affected by the backlash for his support of Trump, his businesses could bear the brunt. Many Americans have started to snub his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and started shifting to alternatives. One of the biggest winners has been Bluesky, a new social media platform, which is growing quickly, attracting nearly one million new users every day. It now has 16.7 million users, and that number keeps climbing.
Bluesky, which has a similar look and colour scheme to X, is taking advantage of this frustration. It's quickly becoming a popular alternative, adding around one million new users every day. With Trump’s victory in the 2024 election, many X users are jumping ship to Bluesky.
So, what exactly makes Bluesky stand out?
Owned by Jack Dorsey, who created Twitter, Bluesky describes itself as "social media as it should be." The popular platform offers features similar to those of X, such as a search bar, notifications, and reposting, but stands apart with its decentralized design. This new setup allows users to host their data on servers outside the company's control. While most users opt for the standard ".bsky.social" username, the platform also allows users to create custom domains, adding a layer of personalization which makes it different from X.
it's official — 1,000,000 people have joined Bluesky in just the last day!!! welcome and thank you for being here 🥳

In functionality, Bluesky mirrors the original Twitter (now X) experience. Unlike Twitter, which relies on centralized servers, Bluesky aims to create an open, decentralized standard for social media.

Unlike X, Bluesky has avoided traditional advertising and is now exploring paid features, such as custom domain names. However, with X still holding around 250 million daily active users, Bluesky has a long road ahead to compete, though its growth trajectory is undeniable.
But why are X users switching to Bluesky?
The platform’s popularity has surged, especially after Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US Presidential Elections. Elon Musk's support for the president-elect and his anticipated involvement in the new administration has driven many users to seek alternatives. Renowned news organisations, such as UK's The Guardian have also left X, calling it a “toxic media platform”.

Globally, celebrities have further fueled Bluesky's momentum. Popular figures like singer Lizzo, actor Ben Stiller, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, and comedian Patton Oswalt have joined the platform, with some reducing or ending their presence on X entirely.
