Boult, a budget audio accessory maker, freshly launched the W40 TWS in India. The wireless solution sits in the highly competitive under Rs 1,500 price bracket and ships with good features on paper. But do these materialise in real life?

Well, I have been testing the 'Berry Red' variant of the buds for a few weeks and can say that - they do (to some extent). Read on as I share my experience with the W40.

Design and Fit:

The TWS has a slick build with a matte finish that does not attract fingerprints and scratches. The hinge feels durable. I accidentally dropped them a few times and can say the case and buds are durable. Full marks for the build. Plus, they fit well in the ears and are ideal for use during workouts and sports activities.

Boult W40 Sound Quality:

The company advertises 13mm BoomX drivers on the buds. On the expected lines, the sound signature is bass-heavy. Because of this, the high-end treble sparkle and background elements get buried in some tracks.

Vocals in movie dialogues are loud and clear. Loudness is more than adequate for listening, thanks to the driver size. As for calling, the TWS comes with quad mics with Environmental Noise Cancellation (ENC). While I had no issues while taking calls in silent and indoor surroundings, there were occasional problems with quality outdoors.

Gaming and Latency:

Boult promises 45ms low latency for gamers. After four taps on any of the buds, the wireless solution enters this mode. The lag is barely noticeable during games. For videos and movies, the lip-sync is also decent. In a few cases, with quick dialogue delivery (like rap music), they seemed to struggle occasionally. But considering the price, I won't complain.

Connectivity and Controls:

Boult has integrated Bluetooth 5.3 with 'Blink & Pair' technology for seamless connectivity on the W40. They performed well in my range test. A buyer will not have connection issues with the latest Bluetooth standard on the paired device. Touch controls also work well with the buds. From changing tracks to entering game mode, full marks to Boult for smooth integration.

Battery Life:

While Boult claims a battery life of 48 hours, they survive for around 25-30 hours. In one single charge, I was about to churn out around five and a half hours of battery life with the buds with 80-85 per cent volume. They can charge via the USB-C port in around 1.5 hours.

Scope of Improvement:

Considering they no longer sell at the introductory price of Rs 999 (currently Rs 1,399), Boult can consider adding different modes to change the audio signature depending on the wearer's taste.

Should You Buy The Boult W40?

If you listen to rap and music with thumping bass, the Boult W40 can be a good choice. They offer decent battery life, good connectivity and gaming performance. While we got the red variant, you can also check out other colours like Ivory White, Khaki Green, and Denim Blue depending on your choice.
