Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the launch of the Over-The-Air (OTA) and Universal SIM (USIM) platform with the aim of enhancing telecom services across India. The state-owned telcos shared the update on X (formerly called Twitter) and said this will improve connectivity and service quality for customers. As per the post, the platform was developed in partnership with Pyro Holdings.

According to a report by ET Telecom, the platform can provide BSNL users the flexibility to select phone numbers on the go and allow SIM replacement regardless of geographical limitations. The news coincides with the company's efforts around upgrades to 4G and the introduction of 5G services in India and can prove a notable step to reduce the digital divide and empower citizens in remote and rural belts with equitable telecom services.

"This #4G and #5G compatible platform will enhance #TelecomServices across India, aligning with the Government's #AtmanirbharBharat initiative and providing BSNL customers nationwide with superior connectivity and service quality,"@BSNLCoroprate said. The platform was inaugurated in Chandigarh, with a disaster recovery site in Trichy, it added.

The platform can aid in "modification of SIM profile and remote file management on SIM cards" Ravi A Robert Jerard, Chairman and MD of BSNL said. This will also allow SIM swaps anywhere in India. Based on these remarks, users can expect improvements in mobile number portability (MNP) and SIM replacement services. BSNL is currently working to gradually deploy 4G services in India.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia shared that BSNL aims to install 80,000 towers for 4G connectivity in the country. The rest 21,000 towers are expected by March 2025. Based on this 4G core, the company will work on 5G. On a related note, the company recently announced a price drop on its Fiber Basic Plan. Earlier priced at Rs 499, the plan now costs Rs 399/month.
