CERT-In (Computer Emergency Response Team of India) has issued a high-severity warning with the Google Chrome browser for desktop, which is affected by remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability. If left unpatched, the vulnerability could allow attackers to “take full control” of affected systems, run arbitrary code and disrupt vital services.

What’s the Issue?

Google Chrome version 141.0.7390.122. Description: Use after free in Presentation API. 123 and earlier on Windows and macOS and 141.0.7390.122 and earlier on Linux. The vulnerability exists due to incorrect implementation in the V8 JavaScript engine of Chrome, a core component for running JavaScript in its web browser. as per the CIVN-2025-0274 advisory issued by CERT-In on October 22.

The flaw could be exploited by convincing users to visit a booby-trapped website, wreaking havoc with their systems while triggering the flaw and in turn allowing attackers to run any code. And depending on the issue, that might mean full system compromise, effectively offering hackers access with the same privileges as your logged-in account.

Why It’s Dangerous

If weaponised effectively, the vulnerability could enable attackers to:

- Remotely smuggle in malware, even ransomware.

- Take away sensitive data, passwords and the history of the sites visited.

- Perform denial of service operations disrupting access to public services or the utility infrastructure.

The danger is compounded because the V8 engine of Chrome executes code in almost all web pages, meaning a security hole in it becomes an attractive target for widespread attacks.

Google’s Fix and What Users Should Do

Google has already issued a security patch through its Stable Channel Update for Desktop on October 21, 2025. The updated build versions are:

Windows/macOS: 141.0.7390.122 or 141.0.7390.123

Linux: 141.0.7390.122

CERT-In recommends that all users and organisations must update Chrome to the latest version immediately. Search for updates manually by going to:

Menu → Help → About Google Chrome — the browser will automatically search for and install the latest patch.

Users should also:

- Turn on auto-updates so you can take advantage of future fixes as soon as possible.

- Do not visit dubious websites or download unknown files.

- Stay tuned with Google's official security blog for news of any additional vulnerabilities at Android.

Bottom Line

This latest Chrome flaw is a reminder that even the most popular browsers are still highly attractive targets for cybercriminals. The warning from CERT-In is unambiguous — patch now or be exposed. Keeping browsers current is not just a matter of nifty features; it is also an important step in digital hygiene and system security.
