OpenAI has released a surprise update to its AI platform, revealing ChatGPT 5.1, a build designed to make conversations feel more intelligent, natural, and adaptive. According to the company, this release improves how the chatbot will follow user instructions and be even more human-like in response. CEO Sam Altman described it as “a nice upgrade”, suggesting that meaningful improvements were being made both in capability and personality.
There are two versions of the new update. The first, ChatGPT 5.1 Instant, is positioned as the default for most users. The company says it has been built to be faster and more efficient, understanding user queries better while offering quicker and smarter answers.
The second, ChatGPT 5.1 Thinking, focuses on advanced reasoning. It simplifies complex explanations, reduces jargon, and uses fewer tokens for basic tasks—making it ideal for users who want clear, concise responses that don't sacrifice depth. According to OpenAI, the "Thinking" model is better at striking a balance between clarity and intelligence. It returns faster results than ChatGPT but still maintains strong reasoning ability.
A key highlight in this update is the introduction of custom conversation styles, letting users personalise how ChatGPT interacts. Options like 'Professional', 'Quirky', and 'Candid' give users more control over tone and personality, making the experience more engaging and personal.
OpenAI said in a statement, “Today’s GPT-5.1 updates and new customisation options are a step toward a ChatGPT that feels like it fits you—smarter, more enjoyable to talk to, and more adaptable to your preferences.”
The rollout of ChatGPT 5.1 represents one more step in the broader plan of OpenAI to make its AI tools both more personal and context-sensitive. With keener reasoning combined with emotional subtlety, OpenAI seems to mould ChatGPT into something more than a chatbot – an assistant that really understands and adjusts for you.
