ChatGPT, a language model of OpenAI, is among the most popular internet sensations in the AI space. While we hear details of the chatbot achieving new heights as it continues to gain new features and capabilities, ChatGPT is reportedly now set to replace Google Assistant on your Android phone. According to Android Authority, codes within the chatbot's Android app suggest that users may get the option to set the model as their default assistant.

According to journalist Mishaal Rahman, these codes were discovered in the "1.2023.352" version of ChatGPT released in December 2023. While "com.openai.voice.assistant.AssistantActivity" activity is turned off by default, once enabled manually (and opening it), the swirling animation overlay (similar to the app's chat animation) appears on the screen.

It draws over other apps without taking the entire screen estate that helps access ChatGPT without opening the dedicated app. Users must note that codes found in an APK teardown may or may not arrive as a public service in the stable release. According to the report, while force enabling the feature activated the animation, the chatbot shut down without listening to the command.

The XML file and the service tags in the latest update hint that the feature to become the "default digital assistant app" is in development. However, due to some undefined declarations, it cannot be set as the default assistant at the moment. After OpenAI decides to ship the features, users will be able to open their new ChatGPT assistant after long pressing home in the navigation button or swiping up from the corner (bottom right or left) in case of gestures.

Rahman noted that the app would not be able to assign a custom hotword (similar to "Ok Google") to respond to them due to the absence of privileged application programming interfaces (APIs). It seems OpenAI aims to attract its users to stick to the app amid Google's announcement of "Assistant with Bard". The company is also working on a Quick Settings tile to launch the chatbot from the toggles in the notification panel. The codes inside the app suggest it may be exclusive to ChatGPT Plus users.
