OpenAI has quietly revised the subscription pricing of its paid ChatGPT plans in India, and the hike is already making users sit up and take notice. Until now, Indian subscribers had to pay for ChatGPT Plus and Pro in dollars, but OpenAI has switched to local rupee billing. While that makes payments simpler, the new prices are higher than what users were paying earlier.

For context, ChatGPT Plus was earlier available at $20 (around Rs 1,750) per month, while the Pro plan cost $200 (roughly Rs 17,500). Under the new pricing system, the same plans now cost Rs 1,999 for Plus and Rs 19,900 for Pro. That’s an increase of about 14 per cent, which applies not only to individual plans but also to OpenAI’s Team and Business subscriptions.

The hike could put off some Indian users who were already concerned about affordability. When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited India last year, several founders and developers highlighted that high subscription costs were a barrier to wider adoption. There had even been chatter about a cheaper “Go plan” that might launch with GPT-5, but so far, there’s been no update on that front.

Despite the higher pricing, ChatGPT remains hugely popular in India. However, competition is heating up — Perplexity AI has partnered with Airtel to give users a free year of Pro access, while Google Gemini bundles premium AI access with perks like extra cloud storage and YouTube Premium.

Globally, though, ChatGPT is still far ahead of rivals. Data from app intelligence platform Appfigures shows that the chatbot has raked in more than $2 billion in consumer spending since May 2023. In 2025 alone, the ChatGPT mobile app generated $1.35 billion, up a staggering 673% year-on-year, averaging nearly $193 million a month. That’s over 30 times more revenue than competitors like Claude, Copilot, and Grok combined.

For Indian users, though, the question remains — will higher subscription prices slow down adoption, or will OpenAI’s dominance keep users hooked despite the premium?
