POPULAR AI chatbot ChatGPT has been the talk of the town since its launch by OpenAI. The model is trained to deliver conversational answers to queries. From writing homework to planning trips, users have utilised the chatbot for diverse tasks.
According to data tweeted by the World of Statistics, ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months across the world. The platform topped the charts beating WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and others.

Telephone: 75 years
Mobile phone: 16 years
World Wide Web: 7 years
iTunes: 6.5 years
Twitter: 5 years
Facebook: 4.5 years
WhatsApp: 3.5 years
Instagram: 2.5 years
Apple App Store: 2 years
ChatGPT: 2 months
The organisation compared the growth of OpenAI’s ChatGPT with other tech innovations like telephones, mobiles, the World Wide Web (WWW), iTunes and more. It took telephones 75 years to cross the benchmark. Mobiles reached 100 million heads in 16 years. WWW reached the milestone in 7 years. Apple iTunes took 6.5 years to reach the same amount of audience.
Talking of social media platforms, Twitter amassed 100 million users in 5 years, Facebook in 4.5 years, WhatsApp in 3.5 years, and Instagram in 2.5 years. The closest competitor to ChatGPT is the Apple App Store, with a duration of 2 years.
Plus, according to Sensor Tower, it took TikTok close to 9 months to reach the desired users.
Earlier in February, Reuters citing UBS analysts wrote, "In 20 years following the internet space, we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app." Further, OpenAI announced a $20 monthly subscription for users in the US, the report adds.
The model has been the hotbed of discussion on social media since its launch in November last year. Tech giant Microsoft invested in the model to integrate AI features into its search engine Bing. The AI-powered Bing is the product of this investment.
ChatGPT aggregates information on the query from the web and presents it to the user in a readable form. This ability of the chatbot is along the lines of making traditional search engines obsolete. To keep up with the evolving technology, Microsoft and Google are fine-tuning their search engines to accommodate AI elements into it.
