DeepSeek Overtakes ChatGPT: A Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has reportedly pushed ChatGPT to the second spot and has become the top-rated free app on Apple's App Store in the US as of Monday, January 27. This development has taken place just a little more than two weeks after the platform was released.

DeepSeek, developed by a startup in Hangzhou, a city renowned for its tech industry, has quickly gained attention. According to app data from Sensor Tower, its AI Assistant, powered by the DeepSeek-V3 model, has seen substantial growth since its launch on January 10. Developers of DeepSeek assert that the DeepSeek-V3 model surpasses many open-source models and competes with some of the leading closed-source models worldwide.

This development is a significant milestone by a new entry in this ever-growing AI market and poses a potent challenge to the US dominance in this field and raises questions over the effectiveness of Washington's export controls aimed at limiting China's access to advanced chip technology and AI progress.

DeepSeek's success showcases that AI progress in China would seem to be less constrained than it was previously thought of, despite the Biden administration trying to prevent the circulation of US-made chips from entering China.

According to a Reuters report, DeepSeek researchers revealed that the DeepSeek-V3 model was trained using Nvidia's H800 chips, with the total training costs reportedly under $6 million.

While there are disputes regarding this claim, the fact that chips were reportedly less advanced than the ones under the radar by US export bans, has created a lacunae in the US tech industry about the success of such controls.

DeepSeek founded in 2023 in Hangzhou, is like any other Chinese tech firm that releases AI models, but it is the first to make its presence known in the US, which matches and in some cases even surpasses the performance of leading US AI models.

The company has seen a sudden rise and despite that, not much is known about it and is increasingly becoming a symbol of China's growing presence in the AI market.
