Apple has released iOS 26, by far its most ambitious mobile software update to date, highlighted by the Liquid Glass theme which transforms the iPhone interface. With the big release, Apple has also discreetly released iOS 18.7, which is a smaller update for those that don’t want to take the big jump.

Why Two Updates?

In this case, Apple has given iPhone owners a ‘dichotomy’ choice:

- iOS 26 has deep structural updates and AI-powered functions.

- iOS 18.7 has simple and easy bug fixes, security updates, and is about 1/15th the size of the new flagship download.

Regardless, Apple is unlikely to support both versions for long. Each version is typically available for 1-2 months, and then the users get pushed toward the new platform.

iOS 18.7: A Lightweight Option

iOS 18.7 is the safer option for users worried about bugs, battery drains and/or app compatibility.

Apple has not disclosed which vulnerabilities its patch addresses; however, typically details will become available after most devices have upgraded to iOS 11.3.

Compatibility: Who Gets What

- iOS 18.7 supports all iPhones launched since 2018 — from the iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr to the current iPhone 16 lineup, including the budget iPhone 16e.

- iOS 26 supports the same devices, except the three oldest models (iPhone Xs, Xs Max, and Xr).

Therefore, it can be seen that iOS 18.7 will serve as the sole and final software upgrade available to these models.

The Choice for Users

So far, the iPhone user base is showing the following behavior patterns:

- Embrace every innovation that comes with iOS 26, including the new Liquid Glass, and all of Apple's top-tier features.

- Continue using iOS 18.7 which is a simplified, more guarded update with enhanced stability.

No matter the case, the clock is ticking on how much longer will Apple support both updates before streamlining chassis systems software integration.
