Elon Musk, owner of micro-blogging platform X (previously known as Twitter), recently announced plans to launch two new premium subscription tiers on the network. Musk's post on X revealed some initial details, suggesting that one tier would give all features at a reduced cost but without an ad-free experience, while the other would cost more but eliminate advertisements totally. Further information about these subscription programs was not offered.

Earlier this week, the social media platform launched a test case, when new users had to pay $1 in order to access the application's main features. On the company's page, it states that individuals who choose to opt out might only do "read-only" tasks like watching videos, reading posts, and following accounts.

Prior to launching the new initiative globally, the business is testing it in the Philippines and New Zealand. "Read at no cost, but write for $1 a year. It's the sole method to combat bots without obstructing actual users," Musk wrote on X.

The main goal of the platform's "Not A Bot" subscription option is to reduce manipulation, minimise spam, and stop bot activity. Since taking control of the platform in October 2022, Musk has been gradually improving it, and these actions are a part of that bigger plan. Advertisers have paused their ads on the platform as a result of his rapid and extensive changes, which included mass layoffs and the dissolution of content moderation teams.

Musk openly acknowledged that the platform's revenue was suffering, partly because of activist pressure on advertisers. To make money and earn back the faith of advertisers, Musk unveiled the "blue tick" subscription, a $8 monthly service. In an effort to win back marketers' trust in X, he also reached out to them with offers of discounts.
