Facebook Messenger, one of the most popular instant messaging platforms, will soon lose its major feature by the end of next month. As per the reports, Messenger users will not be able to send SMS texts using the mobile network via Android phones as it will be discontinued with an OTA update.

SMS support for all users will end on September 28, according to a report citing the support page. It was also stated that Meta will remove the feature with a Messenger Android app update. Users could previously use the platform to respond to standard SMS messages, but now they must use the traditional SMS application on Android to send messages over the cellular network.

The report also notes that starting next month, Android users will have to start using the Google Messages app for regular messaging. This announcement was made by Meta. For those who are unaware, Facebook first introduced the feature in 2016 as an alternative to Google Messages and Apple's iMessage for Android users.

Further, the report also suggests that the Messenger application’s inbox will also undergo changes. As per the Meta statement, the platform sees over 140 billion messages across all the messaging platforms which include Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram on a daily basis. Since the company is taking away the SMS features from Messenger, it now seems that the platform will now only be useful to chat with Facebook friends.
